Let us tell you what we think – Carnival vs Christmas

With carnival out of the way and most of us suffering from post carnival depression, here’s an elaboration on a conversation we at UKSS had. The question was simple; Is Carnival better than Christmas? After leaving that thought to marinate for a while, we came up with the following….

Christmas is an annual event which we simply wouldn’t dream of missing. Family and friends coming together and often travelling, doing whatever it takes to be with one another. Carnival is exactly the same. So many of us travel the world to be with our biological family or our soca family (which is sometimes better), often in hotter climates.

Another highlight of the Christmas season is the food/drink. The opportunity to indulge in your culinary guilty pleasures and not feel bad about it. That goes for the alcohol too – I’ve seen some drinks cupboards at Christmas that could definitely pass for an off licence.

HOWEVER lets be honest, how many of us eat healthy at carnival? Alcohol is an integral part of carnival for most. It is safe to say that a lot of us drink the most during the carnival seasons and balance this by consuming food.

For all you big kids out there, I know you all look forward to the Christmas presents. Surely there is no better present than endless bumpers to wine on OR a selection of man to push back on (whatever your preference). There is also an even better gift which you cannot put a price on; the gift of freedom. Roaming the streets covered in chocolate/paint or mud, not caring what you look like or who sees you.. what other feeling compares to that?

So we’ve shown you that the festive season has nothing over carnival. But what does Carnival have over Christmas?

• Its universal. It can be celebrated by all and not limited to a certain group of people or religion.
• There is more than one carnival a year giving you the opportunity to relive the bacchanal again and again.
• Carnival songs are much better each time round and new ones come out every year
• Carnival wine is better than Christmas wine (think about it).
• Carnival is real, unlike Santa (yes, its true).
• Carnival doesn’t live in the past. Every year it evolves.
• Carnival brings people together without the arguments
