A – Z Of Soca

A – Z Of Soca

We’re gonna do something a bit different here and try to come up with a soca / carnival  related word for every letter of the alphabet.

This may seem like an easy task, but trust me it is harder than it sounds. So we are going to need your help.

If you come across a letter and you think your word should be in its place instead of ours, feel free to lets us know in the comment area below. If it is indeed a better word, we will put your word in the article and remove ours.

Here We Go:-

‘A’ – Alcohol
Now, for many people this one word does cause plenty bacchanal and is the reason for getting on bad in a fete. Others don’t need any special ‘waters’ to be scandalous.

‘B’ – Bachannal
This is another word which MOST of you are very familiar with and we have the pictures to prove it (evil laugh).

‘C’Carnival
People happily get themselves in debt just to be a part of the carnival atmosphere. It’s almost impossible to describe how a carnival can make you feel. Carnivals can possibly be the greatest (public) experience you will have in your life time.

‘D’Drunk & Disorderly
I am sure you thought I was going to say Dance, people don’t really dance to soca (what they do will crop up later on). Drunk & Disorderly is a far more fitting description for the letter D and ties in nicely with A, B & C 🙂

‘E’Energy
You’ll need plenty of this to exist on any soca scene.

‘F’Fete After Fete After Fete After Fete
We long for the weekends so we can fete, fete, fete. Which is why we do our weekly fete guide to make sure you don’t miss a thing. Fete’s are what keep the soca scene alive. They are small doses of ‘home’ on a regular basis.

‘G’Gyrate
The key to the most popular dances in the soca world. It is impossible to dance to soca without gyrating.

‘H’Hot
We as a people love the hot heat of the sun. It just makes everything better, puts a smile on peoples face. Hot sun is an important ingredient in creating the perfect lime.

‘I’Infectious
Probably the most commonly used descriptive word to explain soca music. Once someone is introduced to the ‘real’ essence of soca and carnival they become infected by its greatness.

‘J’Jumbie / Jouvert
A mythological spirit said to posses humans. Historically, those who have been evil are used as instruments of evil in death. A popular choice for Jouvert masqueraders.

‘K’Kaka Lay Lay
A phrase made famous on 1997 by the Soca Artiste Denise Belfon. Referring to the way a female ‘operates’ her behind.

‘L’ Lime
A good lime is the key to a great event. We as a people love to lime and the good thing is a lime can happen anywhere at any time. Key ingredients to a lime are 1. (fun) people, 2. alcohol (not essential, but does help) 3. music. << Lime in full swing.

‘M’Mas/Masqueraders
The colour, synchronisation, visual expression and backbone to carnival. The spirit of carnival captured and displayed on the road. (Mas is so much more than this but we keeping it brief).

‘N’NHC
Notting Hill Carnival. This is what we spend all year preparing for and once it’s gone.. we spend all year looking back on it.

‘O’Ouch
The pain we are willing to put ourselves through to have 2 great days on the road

‘P’Palance
The run away hit song of 2010 which is still having a huge impact on the dance floors of all soca fetes.

‘Q’Quality
People, music, vibes, entertainment, lifestyle, carnivals. When you are involved with soca, the feeling of fulfillment you get from it and all it brings is ‘quality’. Your soul just feels right in a soca environment.

‘R’Revellers
YOU! Any of you that fete and get on bad in a fete or on the road at carnival.

‘S’Swanky
Fancy, posh, something different with style. Made popular in the culture by Soca Artiste Benjai.

‘T’Tantalizing
What we look like on the road carnival Monday (before we costume get wukked-up on).

‘U’Unity
Young, old, small, big, any colour, any race, everyone comes together for the same purpose when soca is played. To have fun.

‘V’Vibes
Guaranteed when your jammin’ to soca. I haven’t come across any other genre of music that consistently delivers the quality vibe that soca does.

‘W’Wuk-up & Wine
Do we really need to explain what this is?

‘X’Xtatic
I am so happy they spelled their band name with an X. The record breaking band of Machel Montano back in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.

‘Y’Yearn
After carnival done. The Yearning for another day of freedom on the road. To much yearning can turn into a Tabanca.

‘Z’Zouk
Zouk is a style of rhythmic music originating from the Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, and popularized by the group Kassav in the 1980s. The beat fits in well with many soca tracks.
